Musiara
From the jaws of death, orphaned elephant Musiara has made a full recovery – all the more miraculous considering the emaciated and weak state he was rescued him.
Musiara is an orphaned elephant whose rescue story begins in 2017 in the Masai Mara. Here, the lone calf was spotted trailing elephant families, almost a stranger to the herd. Later, the emaciated baby collapsed under the shade of the tree, his life force ebbing away. Arriving at the scene, rescuers from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust knew they had a battle on their hands to save him from death’s door and immediately administered life-saving IV drips, providing much-needed hydration. Raising awareness for elephants
Elephants once roamed the plains of Africa in their millions but now, the species are officially endangered. Poachers and habitat loss, amongst other threats, has brought African savanna elephants like Musiara to the brink of extinction, while their forest elephant cousins are listed as critically endangered. There is a very real possibility we might be the last generation to see elephants in the wild.
By sharing Musiara’s story, we hope to raise awareness and engage people in the plight of elephants, and how our own actions could help save a species.
